Our Doctors Perform the New Revolutionary Carotid Stenting Procedure
Carotid arteries are two large blood vessels located in your neck. They carry blood from the aorta to the base of the brain. Buildup of cholesterol, calcium, and fibrous tissue can form plaque inside these vessels, narrowing them and restricting the flow of blood to your brain. This is one of the leading causes of stroke. Carotid artery stenting provides a preventative measure against stroke for patients with carotid artery disease.
Traditionally, physicians would treat severe carotid artery disease by making an incision in the neck and surgically removing the plaque and diseased portions of the artery. A newer approach, carotid artery stenting, enables treatment from inside the vessels. The procedure, requiring only a local anesthetic, is a minimally invasive procedure, which involves inserting a catheter through a tiny incision in the groin and navigating into the carotid artery. A slender, metal-mesh tube, called a stent, is inserted in the carotid artery, which expands, increasing blood flow in areas blocked by plaque.
CVC is committed to providing appropriate and innovative care in the management of carotid artery disease and promoting excellence in invasive and interventional cardiovascular medicine.
